FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) is a deadly viral disease in cats caused by a mutated coronavirus. It has two forms: dry and wet. There are two antiviral drugs that have been used to treat FIP in cats: GS-441524 and EIDD-2801. However, they have some differences in their structure, mechanism of action, and availability.

What is GS-441524?

  • GS-441524 is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the viral RNA polymerase, preventing the virus from replicating its genome.

  • It is a metabolite of Remdesivir, a drug that has been approved for treating COVID-19 in humans.

  • GS-441524 is not commercially available, but it can be obtained from some online sources or compounded by veterinarians.

  • It can be administered as either subcutaneous injections or oral pills.

  • It is effective for all forms of FIP, but higher doses may be needed for ocular and neurological cases.

  • It has been extensively tested and documented for FIP treatment .

What is EIDD-2801?

  • EIDD-2801 is another nucleoside analog that also inhibits the viral RNA polymerase, but it does so by inducing lethal mutations in the viral genome.

  • It is a prodrug of EIDD-1931, a drug that is currently in clinical trials for COVID-19 and other viral infections.

  • EIDD-2801 is not yet approved for any use, but it has been granted emergency use authorization by the FDA for COVID-19 patients.

  • It is only available as oral pills.

  • It has been shown to be effective for FIP in a small number of cases, but its overall efficacy and safety have not been established.

How long does it take to cure FIP with these drugs?

The duration of treatment for FIP with these drugs depends on the form and severity of the disease, as well as the individual response of the cat. According to some sources, the general guidelines are:

  • For GS-441524, the recommended treatment duration is 12 weeks for all forms of FIP, but higher doses may be needed for ocular and neurological cases, or for cats with partial resistance to the drug .

  • For EIDD-2801, the recommended treatment duration is 5-10 weeks, depending on the severity of the disease and the particular cat. The dosage may vary from 5 to 50 mg/kg per day, depending on the form of FIP and the pharmacokinetics of the drug.

  • For FIPCureRx FIP Cure Treatment Solution, the recommended treatment duration is 4-7 weeks, depending on the type of FIP, dry or wet, and also the severity of the disease and the particular cat.

What are the side effects and precautions of these drugs?

Both drugs should be used under veterinary supervision and with regular monitoring of bloodwork and clinical signs. They may also cause side effects, such as liver toxicity, anemia, and gastrointestinal issues. They are not commercially available, but FIPCureRx can be obtained online.
